Are you a pet lover and rather than choosing the usual dog or cat; you have chosen a bearded dragon? It probably seems like an easy pet to look after. But you couldn’t be more wrong! Bearded dragons or as some like to call them beardies are lovable pets but they do take a little care, love, and effort.
The main thing is that one needs to know how to look after them. You might have several questions – what to feed them, can bearded dragons have bananas, what temperatures are ideal for them and so on.
Beardies originated in the outback or deserts of Australia. So being a desert reptile, it needs a similar habitat rather than your garden which you might consider as comfortable. You need to create a similar and artificial environment for your bearded dragon.
Now, coming to their diet, being naturally outside reptiles that thrive in deserts they can eat a large variety of insects like ringworms, crickets, mealworms and so on. In the wild, beardies mostly eat insects and small creatures. Vegetables, fruits or greens probably make up only about 25% of the diet. They can also eat certain vegetables like pepper, sweet potatoes, parsley, kale and also some fruits. Most people are doubtful about bananas; can bearded dragons eat bananas? Well, they can but very little and rarely.
As we already mentioned earlier, your beardie needs a similar environment created for him, hence the diet also needs to be similar as he would get in the wild. But please keep in mind that as your bearded dragon gets older, he probably might not get as much exercise and hence you need to accordingly reduce his meat consumption. Too much of meat could lead him to get obese.
Let us take a look at the bearded dragon’s diet more carefully. Here we have given a list of items that can be fed to him –
- Meat – Locusts, Cockroaches, waxworms, earthworms, kingworms, mealworms and crickets.
- Fruits – Papaya, mango, apples, melon, figs, plums, kiwi, apricots, peaches, dates, bananas. When it comes to fruits, one needs to be a little cautious. Soft fruits can be sugary and can bring about teeth disorders. Hence fruits like kiwi should be given only once a month.
Can Bearded Dragons Eat Bananas?
Well, your answer is yes! However, it should also be given only once or twice a month max. One should not give bananas too often as it could lead to teeth problems. Also since bananas have high phosphorus content and it binds up with calcium, it can bring about metabolic bone disease. Hence, too much of phosphorus rich foods can make your bearded dragon become deficient in calcium which would eventually make his bones weak.
Vegetables – Bell peppers, sweet potatoes, ocra, butternut squash, courgettes, green beans, peas, broccoli in small portions maybe weekly.
Greens – Parsley, clover, collards, kale, dandelion greens, turnip greens, rocket, coriander, endive, and mustard greens.
Bearded dragons can also occasionally eat tomatoes, sprouts, grapes, cucumbers, blueberries, peas, grated carrots.
Please keep in mind that any vegetable or fruit needs to be peeled and cut into bite sized portions for you beardie to easily munch on. Most bearded dragons need to be fed twice a day. However, as they grow older probably just once a day should suffice.
Any doubts and queries you should try and check with your vet or with the pet shop owner. They would be able to give you expert advice. Bearded dragons are very sensitive reptiles. Please love and care for them as you would with any other pet.
